4 Signs Your Heat Pump Has Unaddressed Repair Needs

If your heat pump has been making unusual noises or operating differently than it usually does, you may be concerned. And for good reason! These changes can point to heat pump problems that need to be addressed through a professional HVAC repair appointment.

Just give our team a call to schedule your heat pump repair in Orlando, FL. The service is even more important at this time of the year when we are about to enter the winter season. Whether it’s hot outside or cold outside, you want your heat pump to be in excellent condition to both heat and cool your home when needed.

Surprising or Persistent Sounds

If your heat pump begins to make sounds that it doesn’t usually make, you need to pay attention. Unusual sounds are not always loud and obnoxious like banging, scraping, or shrieking. These sounds are obviously a problem and require immediate service. But quiet sounds like clicking, humming, and rattling are equally concerning, especially when they are persistent. These quieter sounds can cause just as much trouble as the very loud ones.

Long or Short Heating Cycles

If your heat pump only turns on for a couple of minutes at a time, your home may be getting cool or warm based on your thermostat settings. However, the heating and cooling cycles are not completed all the way through and you may be left with air that is significantly more humid, or the temperature may not last.

Having your heat pump turn on and off every couple of minutes adds a lot of strain on the system since it wasn’t designed to start up that often. The same thing goes for your heat pump if it is turning on and staying on without cycling off to take a break after about 10-15 minutes. If you have concerns about how your heat pump is operating, just give us a call and tell us what you’re experiencing.

Not Heating or Cooling

A total lack of heating and cooling is also a red flag. This may seem obvious, but right now we are in the fall season when temperatures are a little milder. It can be easy to ignore or miss that your heat pump isn’t heating or cooling your home enough.

When winter arrives in a couple of short months, you’ll definitely notice if your home is not warm enough. It’s better to go ahead and address concerns (even small ones) now rather than putting off service and potentially facing a larger problem later on.

Frozen Coils

Noticing ice on your coils, either inside or outside means that your heat pump is not working the way it should. You either have a refrigerant leak or there is a lack of airflow. The ice on the coils is alarming, but it isn’t the core problem. Instead, we need to either identify the refrigerant leak or fix any blockages preventing clear airflow to keep ice buildup from developing again.

Ice on the outdoor coils can mean that the defroster mechanism is malfunctioning. Since the heat pump operates when it’s cold outside, it has a defroster in place so that when ice is beginning to develop, it can heat up the coils again so the ice melts before the next cycle. If these defrosters malfunction, the ice can leave permanent damage to your outdoor unit.
