Tips for Making a Noisy AC Quieter

Does your air conditioner seem to operate louder than it should? We’re not talking about unusual sounds that can indicate a problem with your air conditioner. Instead, your air conditioner may have loud airflow or something else that makes AC operation a distraction.

You can schedule air conditioning service in Lake Mary, FL to implement solutions that help quieten how your AC sounds during cooling cycles. Sometimes there are minor adjustments we can make to your unit and other times we need to make a major repair. Either way, we can help you come up with a solution.

Check for Problems

The first step is to determine if there are any problems with how your air conditioner is operating. If there are, our team needs to fix whatever is going wrong to see if that makes a difference. Sometimes AC problems make an obvious noise that indicates something is wrong. But other times AC problems are not as obvious. You may know that your air conditioner is operating louder without noticing any other major red flags.

After we troubleshoot, we can see if our efforts make a difference in how loud your air conditioner operates on a daily basis. If everything is fine inside the system and you’re still experiencing loud operation, there are some additional steps we can take to help.

Purchase Insulation

We can insulate the closet where the indoor portion of your air conditioner is located. Sometimes extra insulation will soundproof the area so that you don’t hear as much of the operation. Alternatively, you can purchase a soundproof blanket to place over the unit.

Keep in mind that these blankets are very specifically designed to still allow airflow to reach the unit. You want to purchase a sound blanket specifically designed for air conditioners as opposed to coming up with a DIY solution. Otherwise, you run the risk of safety issues and overheating.

Sound blankets are also available for the outdoor portion of your unit if that is where the problem lies. Again, you want to make sure you choose a sound blanket specifically designed for an outdoor unit that still allows adequate airflow.

Install a Smaller Unit

In some cases, your air conditioner operates more loudly because it is too large for the space it is cooling. If your air conditioner was incorrectly sized during installation, it may seem like it is very loud. This is because the air conditioner has more power than it needs for the square footage of your home.

The solution here is to install a smaller unit. When an air conditioner is appropriately sized, it has just enough power to cool your home efficiently without being as noisy. If your existing air conditioner is still fairly new, you may not want to spend the money to make an upgrade quite yet. In that case, we can offer you tips for maximizing your existing air conditioner, while maintaining operation that is as quiet as possible.
